The sunroof first came into being back in 1937 by the Nash Motor Company as an optional extra of their top end car models. It wasn’t until much later that they became more mainstream in cars. It also went by the name of the ‘moonroof’. This term wa s coined by Ford Motor company in the early 1970s.
Sunroofs back in the early days were of the manual variation, with electric sunroofs coming into the market later on. There are many types of sunroof in vehicles today, ranging from the pop-up sunroof which is operated by a manually tilted panel. They are often removable, with the vehicle being called a ‘T-Bar’ this is where you have to physically remove the sunroof and store it somewhere.
Another popular variation of the sunroof is the ‘Spoiler Sunroof’ this is where the roof can pop up but also slide across. They often have integrated shade panels. This is one of the most popular sunroof systems.
Panoramic roofs are a newer style of sunroof which have an opening in both the front of the car and the rear of the car. Another modern examples is the Solar sunroof. This is version whereby the glass is an inbuilt solar panel that makes the glass opaque. They also are utilized to power the interior ventilation fans making the car more climate friendly. These are popular in the Toyota Prius hybrid cars.
