Many lamps and glassware items arew made of stained glass, it can frustrating and both daunting if you damage it and you have a gaping hole in your stained glass lamp. So what are your option if your stained glass mirror or lamp is cracked or damaged? It isn’t quite as easy as replacing a glass windshield. Let us look at an example of a stained glass lampshade.
Firstly you need to look closely at the damaged missing glass and trace the missing piece on a piece of glass that you are going to use replace the missing part. Then use a glass cutter to then cut out the glass needed to replace the missing part. Ensure that any of the remaining glass is removed from the lamp that you are about to replace it with, use a pair of pliers to remove any remaining shards of glass.
Next you will need to use a soldering iron to place the new glass into the missing section. Firstly you need to remove any excess solder from the missing gap. Once that is done you can then need to grind the edges to ready it for soldering. Grab a damp sponge to place under the cavity to support the new piece of glass and that it is level with the lamp. This can be rather fiddly, so get someone to help you position it in place for soldering. The final part requires a steady hand to solder the glass in place.
Once done leave for several hours so it sets in place, do not turn the lamp on for a couple of hours just to ensure that the new piece of glass doesn’t distort under the heat from the lamp.
