On September 1, more than 80 cars parked in a Shockoe Bottom lot near Main Street Station were vandalized, their windshields smashed with a brick in what Richmond Police say was the work of a single suspect. Our own mobile technician, Dominic Parada, was on scene helping some of the affected drivers get their vehicles back on the road, and WRIC 8News stopped by to cover the story.
What Happened
Richmond Police responded to a report of vandalism near East Grace and Ambler Streets around 11:18 a.m. on Tuesday. When officers arrived, they arrested 33-year-old Tyler Holtrust, who now faces multiple charges including felony property destruction. By the time our team got there, dozens of vehicles across the lot had windshields with holes and craters in the glass, front and back.
The Real Cost Falls on Drivers
Vandalism like this doesn’t just leave a mess. It leaves victims footing a bill they never expected. As Dominic put it in the WRIC interview, a lot of these drivers are going to end up paying out of pocket, covering their deductible, or watching their insurance rates climb, and none of it is their fault. Depending on the make and model, a windshield replacement can run anywhere from $200 to $1,000.
One VCU employee whose car was among those damaged told local news it was her only means of transportation. Stories like hers are exactly why our mobile team tries to get to situations like this quickly. When your car is unusable, every hour matters.
Many of those affected work at VCU or VCU Health, and several told local news their insurance either denied the claim, doesn’t cover it, or the cost falls below their deductible. In response, one victim’s mother started a GoFundMe called Help VCU Community Replace Windshields to help cover repair costs for those affected. If you’re able to contribute, every bit helps.
